Geranium Stem

One of the most interesting and rapidly adopted supplements to come out of the first decade of the 2000s is geranium stem. Known by many other names, including those of its main therapeutic ingredient 1,3-dimethylamylamine or methylhexaneamine, geranium stem went from a relatively unknown substance that was briefly trialed in the 1970s to a product that is currently sold for uses ranging from a natural insect repellent to ice cream flavoring. But geranium stem’s major use has come in the athletic realm, with everyone from bodybuilders to sprinters using this supplement to increase their performance both in training and in competition.

Geranium stem, and the oil and extracts that are made from it, come from a plant that is indigenous to southern Africa. Pelargonium graveolens has been cultivated by locals and tribesmen for centuries, particularly for its scent extracts, which are highly prized and used in the perfume industry even today. The flowers of the geranium plant have been eaten as food, used as an ingredient in jams, and brewed as a refreshing tea with tonic effects. Early in the 1970s, scientists at the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly did a number of tests on geranium, and found that its blood vessel constricting properties would be perfect for use as a nasal decongestant. However, compounds that were easier to synthesize were found and the product was shelved until the 2000s, when geranium stem was rediscovered and its boom as a health supplement began.

As mentioned above, geranium stem also has fat burning benefits which are an added benefit for those who take it as a workout supplement.

Geranium Stem Dosage

The recommended dose of concentrated geranium stem at any one given time is no more than 50mg. Most individuals who are making use of geranium stem for pre-workout purposes will find a range somewhere between 25 and 50mg will likely be the optimum dose. As the toxicity level for geranium stem is expected to be similar to caffeine, which is in the thousands of milligrams, it’s possible to use geranium stem therapeutically more than once per day. Users are warned to watch out for side effects of having too much 1,3-dimethylamylamine in their system, such as headache, nausea, and jittery feelings.

Guess the FDA will ban it since it’s effective and good for us, and helps keep off weight and disease, unlike all the toxic crap they allow in our food, water and air!

So true… but at the same time, rumors have swirled for years and nothing has been done here yet. The latest and greatest studies show it’s safe and fine over the counter, but there is still going to be pressure from pharma companies who can’t prescribe it for millions of dollars. We’ll see how it pans out, but I’m personally in an “enjoy it while it lasts” mode. Hope for the best, expect the worst….

What supplements actually have Geranium Oil versus the synthetic 1,3 DMAA?
